Crimpless Pumps: How They Simplify Perfume Bottle Assembly and Packaging

A 15 mm FEA crimp pump and a 15 mm FEA crimpless pump share the same glass neck, deliver the same fine mist and are often indistinguishable on the shelf. The difference appears on the filling line: the crimp version needs a crimping head, a crimp-height setting and a permanent metal deformation step, while the crimpless version presses on axially and seats without tooling.

That single mechanical difference changes how a fragrance project is scheduled. Bottles can be molded, decorated and shipped before the pump specification is finalized, and pumps can be stored, color-matched and pressed into place at a second site. For packaging engineers comparing closure systems for a 2026 launch, the useful question is not which pump sprays better, but which retention method takes the most fixed tooling out of the line.

Working definition

Crimpless pump: a perfume spray pump retained on the bottle by axial press-fit or bayonet engagement against a standardized neck finish, instead of by mechanically deforming an aluminum ferrule around the glass. Because the ferrule is never crushed, the pump assembly can be separated from the bottle in refill and recycling formats.

What a Crimpless Pump Removes From the Assembly Line

A crimpless pump removes three process variables from perfume bottle assembly: crimp height, crimp force and the glass stress created when a metal ferrule is crushed onto the neck.

Crimping is a forming operation. The crimp head closes an aluminum ferrule around the glass neck and holds it there through residual deformation, so the operator has to keep crimp height inside a narrow band. Set it loose and the pump turns or leaks; set it tight and the neck cracks, frequently after the bottle has already been filled and labeled.

With a crimpless pump, retention is designed into the parts. The collar engages a defined neck finish and stops at a fixed depth, so assembly depends on the glass drawing and the collar drawing rather than on a machine setting.

Five steps that replace the crimping station

  1. Confirm the neck finish. Measure the glass neck against the FEA or 415 thread drawing before a single pump is ordered.
  2. Fill and checkweigh. Fill on the existing volumetric or mass-flow line, with no crimping enclosure in the same area.
  3. Set the dip tube length. Cut the tube to the inner height of the bottle so it cannot bottom out and shift the metered volume.
  4. Press the pump to seat. Apply axial force until the collar seats fully, with no crimp-height gauge and no ferrule deformation.
  5. Test leak and actuation. Weigh ten strokes to confirm dose, then hold filled bottles at elevated temperature to verify seal integrity.

Removing the crimp head also removes part of the changeover. A line running 13 mm, 15 mm and 20 mm bottles needs one crimp head per neck diameter, while a press-in station handles the same range with a single adjustable stroke.

Crimp, Crimpless or Screw: Matching Retention to the Bottle

Three retention systems cover nearly every perfume bottle in production: crimp-on for permanent single-use closures, crimpless press-fit for removable closures, and screw-on threads for bottles the consumer is expected to open. The neck finish, not the bottle shape, decides which of the three is available.

Table 1. Retention systems for perfume pumps and the neck finishes each one fits
System Retention method Neck finishes Removable Line equipment Best fit
Crimp-on Aluminum ferrule crushed onto the glass neck FEA 13, 15, 18 and 20 mm No Crimp head with height and force control High-volume single-use launches
Crimpless Axial press-fit, no metal deformation FEA 13, 15 and 20 mm Yes, in refill designs Press-in station only Refill, travel retail and late decoration
Screw-on Thread engagement with torque control 12/415, 13/415, 15/415, 18/415 Yes Capping head with torque control Refill bottles, oils and treatment formats

Threaded paths also settle diameter problems. A 13/415 screw pump can be supplied with a 16.0 mm outer diameter and a 15/415 unit at 17.2 mm, so a narrow glass shoulder does not force a redesign. For heavier essential oil and treatment formats the 18/415 screw pump series is the common route, and the 20 mm aluminum screw pump covers outer diameters up to 20.8 mm.

Selection rule: choose crimp-on for the lowest unit cost on a single-use bottle, crimpless when the bottle will be refilled or decorated after filling, and screw-on when the consumer is expected to open and reseal the bottle.

Packaging Design Freedom When Bottle and Pump Are Decoupled

Decoupling the pump from the bottle removes the pump from the bottle decoration schedule, and that is the largest single scheduling benefit of a crimpless design.

When the pump is crimped at the filler, the decorated bottle and the finished pump have to arrive at the same place at the same time. When it is pressed on later, the two components follow separate logistics: glass is stored and decorated in one batch while gold, silver or custom lacquered collars are drawn from stock as the order builds.

Crimp-on flow

  • Bottle and pump must be co-located before assembly
  • One finished assembly in inventory instead of two components
  • A color change means a full pump change
  • Glass clamped in a crimp fixture during closing

Crimpless flow

  • Bottle and pump can be produced on separate schedules
  • Glass and pumps held as separate stock items
  • Collar finish changed without touching the bottle
  • No clamping of glass at any point in closing

Two components on two schedules cost less to hold than one assembly on one schedule.

Neck Finish Fit: The Numbers That Decide Compatibility

Compatibility between a crimpless or screw pump and a bottle comes down to two numbers: the nominal neck diameter and the outer diameter of the pump or collar that seats on it.

Documented pump outer diameters, in millimeters

XYLK17-41517.2
XYLK18-41518.0

A 13/415 pump at 16.0 mm outer diameter fits inside a narrow glass shoulder; 15/415 units at 17.2 mm and 18/415 units at 18 mm cover standard fragrance and treatment bottles; the 20 mm aluminum screw pump at 20.8 mm is used where a wider actuator and a larger discharge per stroke are needed. Crimpless pumps follow the same logic and are offered in FEA13, FEA15 and FEA20 series, each with short and high body heights so collar height can be matched to the shoulder without changing the neck. The key features and benefits of perfume crimpless pumps are worth reading alongside the drawing, because seating depth and collar geometry matter more than body height.

Finish, Handling and Manufacturing Control

Anodized and lacquered aluminum collars are the most visible part of the closure and the part most likely to show handling marks, so finish specification belongs in the same conversation as fit.

Zhangjiagang XinYe Chemical Sprayer Co., Ltd. builds crimp, crimpless and screw pumps together with aluminum collars and caps, and runs aluminum stamping, injection molding, aluminum anodizing and automated assembly in house. Founded in 2006, the company states ISO 9001 certification for its quality system and operates three production bases in Zhangjiagang and Huai'an.

  • Anodized aluminum resists tarnishing in humid storage, while raw aluminum oxidizes to a powdery white film that has to be removed before assembly.
  • Gold and silver lacquers on stepped collars hide the joint between pump and bottle more effectively than a raw metal edge.
  • Friction marks appear when collars rub against each other in bulk packing, so trays or dividers protect the visible surface.
  • Stepped and grooved collars also locate the cap and limit cap rotation, which matters when the cap carries the brand mark.

For a fragrance launch, the decision usually comes down to two questions: will the bottle be refilled, and how late can the pump be chosen? If the answer to either is yes, a crimpless pump is the simpler route, because retention comes from the part drawing instead of a machine setting.

Four items are worth locking down before tooling:

  • Neck finish drawing, matched to the FEA or 415 standard used by the chosen pump series.
  • Pump outer diameter and collar step height, checked against the cap bore.
  • Dose per stroke, verified by weighing ten strokes on the finished fragrance.
  • Storage and handling conditions for aluminum collars, agreed before bulk packing.

Practical Answers for Packaging Teams

Does a crimpless pump deliver the same dose as a crimp pump?

Yes. Dose is set by the metering chamber and the actuator orifice, not by the retention method, so an FEA15 crimpless pump and an FEA15 crimp pump on the same neck meter the same volume. Fine mist perfume pumps typically meter between 0.05 ml and 0.10 ml per stroke, and that figure should be confirmed by weighing ten strokes of the finished fragrance rather than by reading a catalog value.

Can a crimpless pump be fitted to a 13 mm neck?

Yes. Crimpless pumps are produced in FEA13, FEA15 and FEA20 series, and 13 mm is the most common neck for travel and sample formats. For a threaded 13 mm bottle, the 13/415 screw pump with a 16.0 mm outer diameter is the matching alternative.

What causes a crimpless assembly to fail in the field?

In most cases the glass neck, not the pump. The press-fit depends on the neck finish sitting inside the tolerance band of the FEA or 415 drawing, and a neck outside that band produces either a collar that will not seat or a collar that seats loosely. Measure incoming bottles batch by batch and keep a seating check inside the in-process inspection plan.

Are crimpless pumps suitable for refillable perfume bottles?

They are the usual choice. No ferrule is deformed, so the pump assembly can be separated from the bottle and re-seated, which suits the refill and reuse direction set by EU Regulation 2025/40 on packaging and packaging waste. The bottle itself must still be designed for repeated opening, so the neck finish and the collar geometry need to be specified together from the first sample.
